Happy new year! Do you know what happens in 2018? The ASBMT will celebrate its 25th Anniversary! For our Society, 2018 will also be an important year for new directions.  I am thrilled that Dr. John DiPersio will succeed me as our President. (See page 7 of this issue.) John’s scientific insights, history of translational research accomplishments and his love for mentorship will serve the society well.  In particular, I am certain he will strengthen the scientific impact of the Society through the quality of our meetings, collaborations and via our career development activities. READ MORE


Policy Perspectives

As I have begun stumbling through my Tandem preparations, it became clear that while we do have new areas of access and reimbursement issues to pursue, much of our focus this year will be on finishing what we have started – i.e. moving current initiatives from the half-way point to the finish line.  A brief summary of these focus areas is below and I will highlight sessions at Tandem that plan to discuss these issues in more detail in February’s column. Hear Poster Presentations with PosterCast App at BMT Tandem Meetings! 

For the first time at BMT Tandem Meetings, in-person attendees will be able to scan a barcode on a poster and listen to an audio description of the research with the free PosterCast mobile app. It’s a bit like using a self-guided audio tour at an art museum. You will be able to stream audio explanations, recorded by authors, of scientific posters while viewing them in the poster hall. Call for Survivorship Prospective Research Concepts – Deadline Jan. 15  

We’re delighted to announce the second annual meeting of the ASBMT HCT Survivorship Special Interest Group (SIG) will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 7:00– 8:30 am during the BMT Tandem Meetings. Shahrukh Hasmi, MD (SIG Chair) and Linda Burns, MD (SIG Co-chair) are soliciting research concepts for presentation/discussion at the SIG meeting that focus on prospective research studies of any late effects / complications of autologous or allogeneic transplantation. 2018 Fundamentals of Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Training Course

The Fundamentals of HCT Training Course will be held Saturday, March 24 from 1:00-6:00 PM and Sunday, March 25 from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, held proceeding the HOPA 14th Annual Conference at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, CO. This course is jointly planned by the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation and the National Marrow Donor Program®/ Be The Match®. This course provides practitioners with the skills required to care for patients undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), with a focus on pharmacotherapeutic management throughout the transplant process. ASBMT Pharmacy SIG Chair Wins Best Practice Poster at ASHP

LeAnne Kennedy, PharmD, BCOP, CPP, FHOPA of Wake Forest Baptist University Medical Center, Winston-Salem, NC, was one of the Best Practice poster winners at the ASHP meeting in December. Her poster, Evaluation of a Pharmacist-Led Outpatient Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Program, was co-authored by Ali Cook, PharmD.; Brandi Anders, PharmD., BCOP, CPP; Brian Marlow, PharmD., M.B.A.; and Dianna Howard, MD. Dr. Kennedy was interviewed by ASHP TV about her poster.
